Evidence-based dentistry (EBD) is defined as the integration of the current best evidence with the practitioner’s clinical experience and the patient’s values and circumstances to improve health. Dentistry is a rapidly changing profession that requires lifelong learning beyond dental school. Thus, students need to develop the skills for independent informed decisions. To achieve skills and knowledge in EBD, dental students require foundation knowledge and skills that can be challenging to understand and teach. Central to EBD is an understanding of the basics of epidemiology, EBD resources, interpretation of scientific results and critical appraisal process.
This workshop will introduce the components of EBD curriculum in each dental school, review foundations of EBD, competency definitions, statistical concepts, appraisal skills and barriers and opportunities for integration EBD in global community and dental institutions. Workshop will include hands on demonstrations, interaction with attendees and live questions. Dental graduates and faculty need to understand the foundations of EBD practice and how critically appraise scientific evidence. This session will focus on global community of dental educators providing practical skills and tips for EBD practice.
