Session synopsis: 

During the SIG’s, organized by the EHDF in 2023 and 2024, we discussed sustainability, interprofessional collaboration, AI and the points of the WHO Oral Health Action Plan in relation to the Common Education Curriculum (CEC) for dental hygienists (2019). Another discussion was whether research should be added. During SIG 2025 we discussed the first draft of the updated CEC with the above mentioned items.

During a SIG 2026 in Budapest, we want to discuss the second draft of the updated CEC, which has been adjusted using feedback from the SIG 2025 and from the EDHF annual meeting in September 2025.

Secondly, in this 2nd draft, a start has been made on adding knowledge and skills, partly in response to feedback during SIG 2025

This project of EDHF is lead by a projectgroup. The projectgroup consists of Sandra Graça, chair of the education committee of EDHF, Veronica Montebello, treasurer of EDHF and Ellen Bol, president of EDHF. Also the chair of the Taskforce, Jurgita Andruskiene, is part of the projectgroup.

During the SIG 2026 in Budapest, EDHF will present the second draft of the updated CEC. We want to discuss this second draft with the participants of the SIG. Is it complete, what

Ellen Bol – van den Hil, RDH, is vicepresident of the European Dental Hygienists Federation as well as director of the Dutch Dental Hygienists Association. Ellen completed her study on dental hygiene in 1978 and upgraded to bachelor degree in 2009. Ellen was member of the project group for the developing of the first version of the Common Education Curriculum for Dental Hygienists and one of the authors of the introduction article about the CEC in de Journal of Dental Education Europe. She was also involved in developing the European professional profile for dental hygienists. Besides she is owner of a dental hygienists practice in the Netherlands.

Learning Outcomes: 

1. To reflect on the suggestions in the second draft of the updated CEC.

2. CEC is a reflection of what we think is important for the DH of the future. Comply with the contemporary practice of the DH.
