Shaping the Future of Education in Periodontology: Report of the Joint Workshop by the European Federation of Periodontology and the Association of Dental Education in Europe
The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) jointly with the Association of Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) gathered an international panel of experts for the 2nd European Consensus Workshop on Education in Periodontology, held 5-8 November in La Granja, Spain. Over 70 invited delegates, authorities in periodontology and education participated from 22 countries. ADEE were represented by Professor Pål Barkvoll (ADEE President, Oslo University), Professor Barry F. A. Quinn (ADEE Secretary General, University of Liverpool), Professor James Field (ADEE Councillor, Cardiff University) and Professor Sibylle Vital (ADEE EU representative, Université Paris Cité). The workshops were perfectly orchestrated by local organiser Professor David Herrera (Complutense University of Madrid).
Discussions at this year's workshop were especially exciting since the participants identified relevant factors that impacted education in periodontology since 2009. Those factors included the recommendations of the World Health Organisation (WHO) after its 75th World Health Assembly; the new framework for the undergraduate curriculum in dentistry proposed by the ADEE; the impact of teaching and evaluation methods after the COVID-19 pandemic; and the recent EFP Workshops on the classification and on the management of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions (S3-level clinical practical guidelines).
The aim of the meeting was to update the 1st consensus workshop (2009) report published in 2010 (https://www.efp.org/education/undergraduate-education/). The new curricular guidance will serve to inform all bodies involved with periodontal education and focused the workshop on four themes, undergraduate, postgraduate/specialist, continuing professional development and contemporary educational structure and technology for delivery. The EFP and ADEE aim to publish the consensus workshop findings in the second half of 2024.
