Carlos Serrano

Assistant Professor at the department of Dental Education Research, Development & Innovation
Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), The Netherlands

Carlos M. Serrano graduated as a dentist from the University of Concepción in Chile in 2004. In 2010 he obtained his master's degree in medical education and in 2012 he completed the specialty in Prosthodontics. In 2023 he received his PhD with his research in the applications of extended reality (XR) and digital dentistry in dental education.

Since 2015, Carlos has worked at ACTA's Digital Dentistry department, focusing on the development and implementation of new technologies in dental education and care. Since 2024, he has been appointed head of the department of Integrated Dentistry & General Oral Care Clinic, where patient care is provided by dentistry students under the supervision of approximately sixty dentists.

María José Atenaas Godoy

Teacher and researcher
Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), The Netherlands

Graduated as a dentist in 2019 in Chile, María José joined ACTA full-time in 2022. Passionate about digital dentistry, she enjoys exploring the intersection between patient care and cutting-edge technology—whether it's mastering CAD tools, testing new chairside workflows, or pushing the boundaries of XR simulation.

She is part of the University of Amsterdam’s Education Research Fellows Programme, where her current research focuses on the role of extended reality in developing clinical skills. Since 2024, she coordinates a fourth-year dentistry course at ACTA, where students dive into digital workflows and hands-on clinical practice—often on the same day.
