Session synopsis: 

This interactive workshop limited to 40 persons explores Inter Professional Education and its impact on communication. The session will commence with a brief presentation on key principles in interprofessional education and examples of IPE learning activities that aim to develop students’ interprofessional communication skills. The session aims to be highly interactivive and will include:

  • Warm-up activity where participants identify barriers and facilitators to implementing IPE in their institutions.
  • Breakout activity – in groups of 5-6, participants are given a patient case study and tasked with developing an innovative, IPE learning activity that aims to develop students’ interprofessional communication skills.
  • Each group presents their ideas for an IPE learning activity focused on the case study they were given and receives feedback from the other participants.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the principles and benefits of interprofessional education (IPE).

2. Identify barriers and facilitators to implementing IPE in their institutions.

3. Propose innovative IPE teaching strategies for health professions students.

4. Develop a plan to for an IPE learning activity that aims to enhance students’ interprofessional communication skills.
